Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue
by Stephanie Laurens
Genre: Regency Romance
Ages: 17 and up
I received an e-book from Goddess Fish Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
Description:
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Miss Heather Cynster . . . but not before she encounters kidnappers, danger, and a daring rescue at the hands of Viscount Breckenridge. Determined to hunt down her very own hero, one who will sweep her off her feet and into wedded bliss, and despairing of finding him in London’s staid ballrooms, Heather Cynster steps out of her safe world and boldly attends a racy soiree.
But her promising hunt is ruined by the supremely interfering Viscount Breckenridge, who whisks her out of scandal—and straight into danger, when a mysterious enemy seizes her, bundles her into a coach, and conveys her out of London.
Now it’s up to the notorious Breckenridge to prove himself the hero she’s been searching for all along . . .
My review:
This is the first Cynster novel I have read, so I was not sure what to think. The description sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did because it was a lot of fun.
Heather and the Viscount Breckenridge are as close to opposites as you can find, at least at first. Heather is a proper young lady on the verge of being put on the shelf and Breckenridge is a notorious rake. They have known each other for years and he has always been protective of her in that annoying older brother way, which is what leads him to remove her from the scandalous soiree she ventures into. Only to witness her kidnapping but be too far away to interfere.
I enjoyed the first half of the novel without reservation. The story and characters were fun and interesting. The element of mystery kept me wondering all the way through. I am still wondering about that not-particularly-villainous villain...Is it weird that I want to read a book about him?
My only problem was with the second half of the book. There was a lot more sex than I felt comfortable with once you reached a certain point. Before that point, the romance was really cute with their tensest moment happening when Breckenridge helps Heather with her new boots. (A really sweet scene, by the way.) I would have preferred that Breckenridge act gentlemanly rather than Heather turn rakish, but it did not ruin the story for me.
The conversations between Breckenridge and Heather were a lot of fun. Heather is a hopeless romantic and Breckenridge is...not. At least, not verbally. I enjoyed watching Heather try to coax some sort of declaration of affection out of him while he remained completely stubborn. They make a lovely couple.
I would recommend this book to lovers of light, fun romance.

Thanks for the review, it's always nice to read what works and doesn't work in a story and this definitely sounds like something I would want to read. I'm glad you said you had not read any other books in the series because that lets me know that I will be able to enjoy it since I haven't read the others either.
